This is regarded as the final release of the infamous Podesta emails. The whistleblower WikiLeaks released thousands of emails in what constitutes the final installment of the Podesta emails. The number of Podesta released till date is 55,694.
US Presidential Elections
The final batch of Podesta emails have deliberately been released only a day before the US elections are set to take place. These leaks are also being seen by some of the people as attempt by Russian intelligence agencies to affect the outcome of the 2016 elections.
What are Podesta Emails?
In March 2016, the personal Gmail account of former White House Chief of staff, John Podesta was hacked. Podesta was also the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
The data breach targeted Podesta hackers targeted his Gmail accounts. Most of the emails hacked pertained to his work.
The modus operandi of the hacking attack suggested that it was carried out by a group known as the Fancy Bear. This group is affiliated with the Russian government.
WikiLeaks and Podesta emails
The most of Podesta emails were obtained by WikiLeaks. In this context, none of them have been authenticated by the Clinton campaign.
Fabricated emails
There have been fears that at least some of the Podesta released through WikiLeaks have been engineered or downright fabricated.
The reasons for fabricated emails, is that none of them have been authenticated either by Podesta himself or Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
However, the timing of the podesta release also comes with a huge question mark. These revelations have been made when the two main presidential candidates seem to have been exhausted due to excessive mudslinging at each other.
The new WikiLeaks revelations into Clinton’s email scandal have blown a new life for Trump’s campaign.
Notably, the current podesta release is also very suspicious since it seems to be designed to affect Hillary’s chances of becoming the president.
